What are cookies ?
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site.
- First party cookies are cookies set by the website you’re visiting. Only that website can read them. In addition, a website might potentially use external services, which also set their own cookies, known as third-party cookies.
- Persistent cookies are cookies saved on your computer and that are not deleted automatically when you quit your browser, unlike a session cookie, which is deleted when you quit your browser.
Cookies can be used for various purposes, such as for “remembering” user preferences or to generate statistics. Some types of cookies are technically necessary for the functioning of the service (essential cookies).
How do we use cookies?
At ENISA we mostly use first party cookies, which comprise of two categories:
- Essential cookies, which are necessary for the technical functioning of the website. These cookies are always placed when you visit the ENISA’s website. Aside from the first party cookies, users may find cookies from the europa.eu domain, placed when:
- filling out forms containing CAPTCHA to determine whether the user is human
- logging in the website
Analytics cookies, via Europa Analytics. We use these purely for internal research on how we can improve the service we provide for all our users.
The cookies simply assess how you interact with our website – as an anonymous user (the data gathered does not identify you personally). Also, this data is not shared with any third parties or used for any other purpose. The anonymised statistics could be shared with contractors working on communication projects under contractual agreement with the Commission.
Every time you visit ENISA’s website, you will be prompted (via a banner) to accept all or accept only essential cookies.
If you accept all cookies, it is considered that you provide your consent for analytics cookies.
If you accept only essential cookies, a cookie will still be placed to prohibit any tracking for analytics purposes on our side.
