The Agency has launched a new report on Security Issues in Cross-border Electronic Authentication. Improving the interoperability of electronic identification and authentication systems is a European task and a task for all Member States. ENISA analysed the current situation and assessed the security risks of electronic authentication in cross-border solutions. To visualize these risks, two different projects offering cross-border authentication have been examined and evaluated, Netcards/EHIC and Stork. The ENISA Working Group on Privacy & Technology has been established to analyse the problems posed by these technology trends and the implications for the current EU legal framework. The main task of the Working Group is to propose actions to cope with these difficulties. In this report, we identify the main technology-induced gaps between data protection regulation and the realities of the developing socio-economic environment. We consider the potential threats and opportunities presented by state-of-the-art technologies and suggest priorities for tackling the most pressing gaps.No publisherIdentity & TrustTrainingsPrivacy2009/08/07 12:50:00 GMT+2Report/StudyVideo clips

Citizen data protection in focus - ENISA on privacy in national eID cards: Europe needs a strategy The EU Agency ENISA [the European Network and Information Security Agency] today launched its Position Paper on security features in European eID schemes. The paper gives the first overview of the vast disparity between privacy features in eID cards across Europe. eID cards are currently used mainly for tax declarations and other e-government services, but applications are branching out into the commercial sector. At the same time, Europe lacks a coordinated strategy for how to protect the private data stored by the card, which is both an obstacle to eID interoperability and limits its acceptance by the users. This analysis sets the stage for a privacy baseline in European eID cards. No publisherPrivacyIdentity & Trust2009/02/03 16:45:00 GMT+2Press ReleaseECSM video clip (short version)
