Study on Economics of Network and Information Security
As an input to its activities on economics of network and information security (NIS), ENISA has commissioned a study identifying barriers and incentives for NIS. The overarching aim of the report is to analyse the economic impact of NIS, to assess added value and contribution to the smooth functioning of the Internal Market for e-communication. ENISA tendered the study related to the overall subject matter of "Barriers and Incentives for Network and Information Security (NIS) in the Internal Market for e-Communication" – as foreseen by the ENISA Work Programme 2007 "Facilitating the Working of the Internal Market for e-Communication".
ENISA also held a consultation workshop in December 2007 (Belgium) as well as an open public consultation from March till May 2008 on the same subject matter. This wide consultation process brought together representatives from all relevant stakeholder groups, i.e. EU and national decision-makers, industry and consumer representatives, academia and think tanks, as well as international organisations.
More information about the report and the results of the open consultation are available here.
Security for Micro-Enterprises Studies
The digital information age continues to provide many opportunities for businesses, especially for micro-enterprises. However, the further development and user adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) still comes with vulnerabilities. In fact, micro-enterprises have been identified as one of the weakest links in information security despite the increasing demand for their services as a supplier and sub-contractor in value chains of larger companies. Thus, micro-enterprises may find themselves losing business opportunities. Being the backbone of economy and chief provider of jobs in many EU Member States, this may create severe damage to the innovativeness and competitiveness of European economy. Therefore, changing information security behaviour of micro-enterprises must be one of the main objectives of information security policy. Several EU Member States have already implemented programmes aiming at changing information security behaviour of micro-enterprises. However, others still have a need for knowledge, information and support in the field.
Since 2008 ENISA has launched a number of activities in this area. The reports of these activities is available here.
